How to read a birth chart with houses, planets and yogas

How to Read Your Birth Chart: A Beginner’s Guide to Houses, Planets & Yogas

Share:

A birth chart (Janam Kundli) is one of the most important tools in Vedic astrology. It represents the positions of the planets at the exact time and place of your birth. By studying the Kundli, a Vedic astrologer can analyse different areas of life, including personality, career, relationships, finances, health tendencies and important life periods.

For beginners, a birth chart may look complicated. However, understanding a few fundamental concepts makes it much easier to interpret.

1. Understand the Ascendant (Lagna)

The Ascendant or Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time of birth. It forms the foundation of the Kundli and determines the arrangement of the 12 houses.

The Lagna is primarily associated with personality, physical characteristics, self-expression and your general approach to life.

2. Learn the 12 Houses

Each house represents a different area of life. The 1st house represents self and personality, the 2nd house wealth and family, the 4th house home and property, the 5th house intelligence and children, the 7th house marriage and partnerships, the 9th house fortune and higher knowledge, the 10th house career and profession, and the 11th house income and gains.

The remaining houses represent other important areas such as communication, competition, transformation, expenses and spirituality.

3. Understand the Planets

The nine major planetary influences in Vedic astrology are Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Each represents different energies. For example, Jupiter is associated with wisdom and expansion, Venus with relationships and comforts, while Saturn represents discipline, responsibility and perseverance.

4. Look at Yogas and Planetary Strength

Specific planetary combinations are known as Yogas. Raj Yoga and Dhan Yoga are examples often associated with success and financial potential. However, a Yoga should never be interpreted in isolation. Planetary strength, house lordship, aspects and the current Mahadasha and Antardasha also need to be considered.

Final Thoughts

Learning to read a birth chart requires understanding how houses, planets, signs, Yogas and Dashas work together. A complete Kundli analysis is much more meaningful than relying on a single planetary placement or generic horoscope.
